Nanomanufacturing -- Choi, Guan, Jung, Li, Lu, Zhang
Development of non-clean room and economical manufacturing methods is necessary to achieve affordable production of polymer based biomedical devices. Additionally, optimization of those methods is key to realizing the goals of this NSEC.
Nanofibers in Tissue Engineering -- Drilling, Li, Choi, Johnson, MaWe will use Electrospun polymers as scaffolds to
study cellular interactions and generate implantable structures. Electrospinning is used because it is a controllable process that can generate non-woven fibrous structures, allows the use of natural and synthetic polymers, is relatively cheap, and it quickly covers large surface areas. Polymers are used for their biomimetic properties. Specifically, polycaprolactone (PCL) is used for its chemical stability and ability to maintain functional levels of mechanical properties in the device due to prolonged degradation time in the body.
