CONGS meeting with Dr Tomasko (6/26/2006)

Meeting for NSEC outreach program
Time: June 26th, 10:00am - 11:30am @ Room 233 Koffolt lab
Attendee: Prof. Tomasko, Ruth Li, and Hae Woon Choi

How far shall we expand our outreach program?
- With limited funds, it is more feasible to focus our outreach to the Columbus area
Columbus public schools have 65% African American population, good for focusing on diversity
Bring students in instead of going to the schools
- NSEC center possibly consider developing an interactive website in the future for nationwide outreach purpose
Prof. Dave Dickinson may be a resource for this
We need to know about the events ahead of time
Our recent EIM (engineer in motion) was announced the day before the event and didn't provide information about
the student group (age group, time)
- Prof. Tomasko will provide a list of upcoming events (see attached) with Prof. Yi
Several tips from Prof. Tomasko for effective outreach classes
- We need to form groups of several members around outreach activities to lower the work load for NSEC fellows and to make activities possible without all members being available
- Streamline activities: ex. different versions to target different age groups
- We need to ask questions and motivate students to think as scientists
- The outreach activities / class should be exciting and interactive
- Let visiting students be involved in activities (hands on practices)
- 7 activities may be enough, but 10 solid activities are preferred
- Possibly set up practice sessions for activities so NSEC fellows can get feedback on the planned activities
- NSEC hired 3 high school teachers (chemistry/physics/biology) this summer to help develop ways to incorporate nanotechnology in science classes
- Encourage NSEC fellows not directly involved in hosting outreach activities to help in other ways (welcome the buses, provide transportation, help with freshmen course)
Future plans
- Prof. Tomasko will email a list of outreach events NSEC participates in
- Prof. Tomasko will ask Prof. Allen Yi for current information on outreach activities and separate outreach package for outreach, then he will sort out which activities are to be kept and which ones to need to be further developed
- We will team up and package the activities and help develop those that need to be developed

CONGS study body meeting for SWOT analysis (to be presented at June 1 NSF site visit)
Date: Tuesday, May 30, 2006
Time start: 5pm
Time end: 6pm
Place: Koffolt Labs 336
Attendance: ~30 students, Paula, Dr. Lee

- Paula: posters being printed
Dr. Lannutti made some changes on some posters regarding societal impact last Fri
All posters have been put in pdf format, and will be sent out to students to review
Powerpt from Dr. Lannutti will be emailed w/ explanation of why he made the changes
*Make sure you study your poster, in particular any changes made before the site visit!*

- Dr. Lee:
Take a look at other posters so that you know what's going on in NSEC
There will be several non OSU students, it's a good chance to mingle
Leave your poster at MicroMD unless told otherwise beforehand

- Paula:
4pm, all students required to be at 202 Pfahl Hall (connected to Blackwell) for CONGS/SWOT presentation to site visit team

Dress: business casual

Bus shuttles: 1:30pm sharp to MicroMD for students, 2:00pm for site visit team
3:30pm depart MicroMD for site visit team, 3:50pm for students
If driving to MicroMD, please get there by 1:30pm please
